Mission Statement
ABC CANADA supports the development of a fully literate Canadian population.
ABC CANADA is a joint initiative of business, labour, education and government, supporting the development of an educated and adaptable workforce through the fostering of a lifelong learning culture.
To pursue its mission, ABC CANADA will undertake the following activities with respect to literacy issues:
- Raise awareness of literacy and numeracy issues in the general public and in the private sector.
- Research literacy issues to provide information to the literacy field and give direction to ABC CANADA's public awareness campaigns.
- Encourage the development of workplace literacy programs by being a resource to the private sector.
- Provide support to literacy organizations.
- Interpret the concerns of, and represent the private sector, particularly in the area of public policy.
History
In 1990, a group of concerned people from business, labour and education decided that they could make a difference. They created ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation, with the twin purposes of raising awareness about literacy and getting the private sector actively involved in supporting literacy. The founders of ABC CANADA were convinced that business could no longer afford to ignore literacy.
ABC CANADA was launched on September 8, 1990 -- International Literacy Day. Our national board comprises leaders from business, education, government and labour.
Sponsorship
Thank you to all of our sponsors who have made our efforts to promote literacy in Canada so successful! It is their generous donations of financial contributions, media space, creative services and product donations which have allowed us to reach so many people with our literacy promotion campaigns. With the help of our sponsors, we continue to run successful public awareness campaigns, we hold golf tournaments for literacy in each province and territory and we have even initiated a day to celebrate family literacy nation wide. However, there are still many people in Canada whom we are not reaching, who are having trouble reading and writing. It is with your help that we can reach our goals and become a fully literate Canadian population. We encourage you to find out how you can get involved!
